Ugly Cars and Rockin Tunes

During last week’s episode of the Office I got really excited while watching a commercial for some ugly SUV. “Why am I getting excited watching this car commercial?” I asked myself. Then I noticed that the background music was The Clash’s cover of Pressure Drop. I should mention that in college I played this song so loud in the dorm that my neighbor started throwing her shoes at our adjoining wall (I don’t know why she thought this would do any good.)

Anyway the Clash’s version actually isn’t my favorite. The Specials rock this song out so hard that everytime I listen to it my brain almost explodes. I’m pretty sure I could listen to this song everday for the rest of my life. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time.

The original is actually a little slow for me but I like it. It’s definitely a 100% solid reggae tune.

This isn’t a cover of Pressure Drop but around minute 1:15 he does steal a line from the song. I had heard the song a few times before I picked up on it but when I finally noticed I was beyond excited.

  1. I like Izzy Stradlin's version of Pressure Drop on his first cd.

  2. Check Robert Palmer's version off his 1975 album of the same name. He's backed by Little Feat.

  3. I, also, in my college apartments would crank the Clash, especially Pressure Drop. Dunno why; I guess I love the chord progression and of course the opening riff...i made a tape of a bunch of clash and sex pistols and drove through campus in my old grenada cranking that stuff thinking i was all that wondering why the girls weren't flocking to me...

  4. Also, The Oppressed, a very hardcore anti Nazi Skinhead band covered Pressure Drop. The version is a bit rough, but being that I'm a Skin who loves punk, reggae and Skinhead streetpunk, I love it.

  5. Good post. I wonder if Joe Strummer would've allowed this and the Jaguar's commercial use of "London Calling"? Speaking of which, does anyone have a link to an online copy of that Jag commercial? I couldn't find one on YouTube.
