Sonic Boom Six - The Ruff Guide To Genre Terrorism

What do you get when you mix KRS-One, Tsunami Bomb, Selector, and Voodoo Glow Skulls? Pencil’s down. The answer would be Sonic Boom Six’s “The Ruff Guide To Genre Terrorism”.

Mixing ragga, dub, ska, punk, and hip hop, Sonic Boom Six successfully create the ultimate party music. The lyrics are political, and the vocals mix between the smooth female fronted signing to straight up rapping (not to mention the generous sprinkling of good old fashion punk sing-alongs as well).

If you have a chance to check them out live, do so, it’s a fun show.

The Adolescents - For Fans of Black Flag

For the life of me, once I hear the song Amoeba, I can’t get it out of my head for DAYS. Heck, I even bring it into everyone else’s head through my constant singing of this early classic. Even if you’ve never heard it before, it’s probably in your head right NOW!

The Adolescents date back from 1980, and were a super-group composed of members of both Social Distortion and Agent Orange (dirty secret: I don’t like Social Distortion There goes like 49 scene points.) Playing old school punk/hardcore in the veins of Black Flag, The Adolescents may have not had the fame of Black Flag, but definitely influenced punk and hardcore just as much.

Mates of State Video- Get Better

Mates of State - "Get Better"

The Mates of States just posted a new video for Get Better. Like everything Mates of State it's weird and cute... in a weird way. Plus for some reason I love the sentiment of that chorus "Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better" For some reason it reminds me of my favorite Mountain Goats lyric "Maybe everything that falls down eventually rises."

Arrah and the Ferns Kaput

I’m a little late on this one I know but bear with me as I work through my grief.

Word from the Arrah and the Ferns Myspace is the band is coming to an end. The release of their new album has been postponed indefinitely and their last show will be in Muncie Indiana on May 3rd (anyone up for a roadtrip?)

Dry your eyes it’s not all bad news. Carl, Joey and Arrah along with some non-ferns are planning to relocate to Philly and focus on the side-project Woodlands. I like what I hear on the Woodlands Myspace (especially check out Slim 5) so I suppose all’s not lost.

Built to Spill- The Normal Years

I’ve mentioned before how much I love Built to Spill. Lately I’ve been listening to their 1996 compilation The Normal Years. The songs are a collection of singles, live songs and previously unreleased recordings. Some of them are a little rough but I would say even for non-hardcore Built to Spill fans it’s a fun listen.

Running

So I joined my work’s running team. I’m a little worried since I think they’re much more hardcore than me. My approach to running is… well lets call it slackadaisical...

In any case here are a few of my favorite songs to run to:

D.R.I - The Godfathers of Crossover Thrash

People will try to tell you that Slayer or Metallica are the founders of thrash... and nothing could be further from the truth (well... unless someone tried to tell you that Kenny G is the reason thrash exists, then that's pretty damn off.)

DRI (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) were and still are one of the most overlooked bands as far as thrash music goes, yet almost any band that plays the thrash crossover style has been influenced by these guys, including more famous acts such as Suicidal Tendencies.

Their music is fast, loud, and just through one listen you could tell how many bands actually owe their entire careers to some Dirty Rotten Imbeciles.

They've had a few lineup changes throughout the years, but still impressive that they are playing 25 years later.

The Most Uncomfortable Interview EVER (Henry Rollins)

Ok, just saw this over at punknews.org and Henry Rollins is vicious during this interview. It is actually a little bit difficult (and hilarious) to watch. Really early (during Black Flag days, 1985).

Ouch.

Paint it Black Street Show! 4/10/08)

A free Paint it Black show outside on the sidewalk on 13th street? It doesn't get much more punk rock than that. In retrospect, parking 20 blocks away to avoid an $8.00 fee was not a good idea (to be explained later), but luckily, I made it before they started.

The block was closed off, and was filled with eager punk rock and hardcore fans, waiting for Philly's favorites. There wasn't a stage anywhere in site, meaning that the band would have to play right on the pavement with everyone else. 13th street was packed, and made it very difficult to move (although watching random businessmen and fancy couples on dates faces as they walked by was completely priceless).

Paint it Black finally took the sidewalk, and the crowd immediately bumrushed the band. People were climbing trees and treediving into the crowd, while everyone was attempting to crowd surf. For the first few songs, it was impossible to hear Dan, since everyone was landing on him (he was in the middle of the crowd) and could barely sing. A few songs in, the microphone gave out and there were absolutely no vocals for the rest of the night, but the entire crowd sang along to replace Dan, and making it a true community show. Some highlights included (not complete):

-Goliath

-Pink Slips

-Atheists In Foxholes

-Exit Wounds

-Cannibal

-CVA

-So Much For Honor Among Thieves

-Shell Game Redux

-Nicaragua

-The Ledge

-Past Tense Future Perfect

Somewhere at the end of their last song, someone treedived right onto me, and split my head open (I put my hand up to my head, and my hand was completely red covered in blood). I sticked around for them to finish their last song (still singing along), but I was not able to see if they played an encore or not, as I needed to figure out if I had to go to the hospital or not... Let me add, I was quite the site trying to sprint to my car parked 20 blocks away with blood drenching my hair and dripping down my neck (I never saw so many people try to avoid me at once, even the cops.) Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go pour some more peroxide on myself...

Teenage Bottlerocket and The Copyrights Live (4/6/08 at The Dragonfly)

After a two hour drive, parking rather illegally, and wandering the streets of Harrisburg looking for the damn show, I finally made it to the Dragonfly Club to catch Teenage Bottlerocket. These Wyoming boys rarely make it out to the east coast, and on account I'm a huge fan (my first post was on them), I was definitely extremely stoked for this show.

I got in the rather swanky club, and it wasn't crowded, but decently full (21+ show). I missed a bunch of the local bands, but got there in time for The Good Things.

The Good Things

Traveling from Detroit, The Good Things are your standard bar rock band. They played really tight, but they seemed to lack energy on stage, relying on The Suicide Girls (who also happened to have a booth at the show) dancing on stage to make up for it. The Good Things are a little too straight up rock n' roll for me, and I got bored about halfway in their set.

The Copyrights

After a few raffle callings, The Copyrights were up next. I've heard good things about The Copyrights, but never got a chance to check them out. Blasting into their set of '77 influenced punk rock, they asked if they could start over since they were out of tune. Before starting over however, they made sure to poke some fun at The Suicide Girls ("I bet your parents are really proud of you!") and any guy that hit on them ("And to all guys who hit on them... you're really unique! I'm sure they don't ever get hit on by your type!"). They played a very solid energetic set, and the originally apathetic crowd broke into a pit.

Setlist:
Cashiers

Company

Second Hearse Same As The First

Kids Of The Black Hole

Head Count

Knee Deep

Lights Out

57 North

Charlie Birger Time

Shit's Fucked

Button Smasher

Planet Earth 1994

Get The Fuck Out

Weapons

Teenage Bottlerocket

After The Suicide Girls did some topless raffles or something, Teenage Bottlerocket came on stage and blasted straight into "Bottlerocket", and didn't let up the entire night. Taking cues from The Ramones, they played their infectious pop-punk with very few breaks (leaving us in the pit extremely exhausted). The floor was completely beer soaked by the end of their set, and I'm pretty sure that my girlfriend and I were the only sober ones there. Teenage Bottlerocket definitely were “on”, and judging from the response of the crowd, they should play the east coast more often (take a note if you're reading this guys!) They played a decent mix of songs from both “Total” and “Warning Device”, and were even able to sneak one in from their first album “Another Way”

Setlist (from what I rememeber, not in order)

-Bottlerocket

-In The Basement

-Gave you my heart

-Social Life

-Welcome to the Nuthouse

-Pacemaker

-Totally Stupid

-Wasting Time

-Stupid Games

-Crashing

The Slackers - Self Medication (New Album!)

Do you like the old school ska/reggae sound? Then you probably already know about The Slackers, who have been blessing the ska scene with it's smooth style since 1991. What you may not know is that they are set to release their 11th album entitled “Self-Medication” on April 29th, 2008.

Self Medication takes on a bit more reggae influences than their previous work thus making the songs a little slower in pace, but they do this successfully without taking an ounce away from the energy (speaking of energy, go see The Slackers live, it's a hell of a good time). The tunes are catchy, (see Everyday is Sunday) and a necessity for any ska or reggae fan. For fans of Hepcat, Toots and the Maytals, and The Toasters.

The Best 20 Songs that Finish Under 35 Seconds

Sometimes you just don't have time to be putting up with long epic bullshit. So take your crazy guitar solos elsewhere, because here is the top 20 songs that finish under 35 seconds (Holy smokes batman! You can listen to every one of these songs here, and be done in under 10 minutes!)

20.River City Rebels – He She It

Raging gang vocals.

19. Atom and his Package – Bloody Lip

I wouldn't mess with him.

18. Cut the Shit – Your Night To An End

Rather pissed off hardcore... I'd be pissed too if I lived in Boston.

17. Big D and the Kid's Table – What The Hell Are You Gonna Do?

I ask myself this question everyday.

16. Paint It Black – This Song is Short Because It's Not Political

I don't think that's the reason...

15. NOFX – Gotta Pee

This song has become my anthem anytime I have to... and it annoys the hell out of everyone.

14. Give Up The Ghost – The Ice Age Is Coming!

Actually, I thought it was Global Warming, but whatever.

13. Groovie Ghoulies – Doin Fine

Catchiest song on the list.

12. Dillinger Four – Farts Are Jazz To Assholes

Best.Song.Title.Ever.

11. Against All Authority – 30 Second Song

Only song on the list that involves horns.

10. Lagwagon – Randal Gets Drunk

For a band that isn't a ska band... they sure play it well.

9. Less Than Jake – Anchor

Oh Shit! I lied about #11.

8. The Steal – Up In Smoke

Kid Dynamite influenced punk rock.

7. Bigwig – Freegan

A big fuck you to all vegetarians (including myself.)

6. Bouncing Souls – Theme From An American High

Only the Souls could make a 30 second song an anthem.

5. AFI – Hearts Frozen Soil Sod Once More By The Spring Of Rage, Despair, And Hopelessness

The song will be over by the time you try to decipher what the hell the title means.

4. Kid Dynamite – Scary Smurf

Can you say living room Mosh pit?

3. Circle Jerks – Don't Care

They probably don't care that they're on this list.

2. Paint It Black – Cannibal

Possibly the most energetic opener I've ever heard.

1. Circle Jerks – Deny Everything

You won't be able to get it out of your head.
