Against All Authority - Destroy What Destroys You (For fans of Suicide Machines, Less Than Jake, Operation Ivy)

Against All Authority is the perfect summertime band (assuming that your summers consist of smashing the state, murdering the patriarchy, and all around being a street urchin). Their first album "Destroy What Destroys You" is a classic ska punk album that keeps up the fury throughout the entire album.

The music is sloppy ska/punk in the veins of Operation Ivy on speed. For those familiar with AAA's later work, "Destroy What Destroys You" has more of a ska element to it than other releases.

Definitely a must for any fan of furious punk rock.

Two and a Half White Guys - Leather Jackets and Moustache Wax (For fans of Sublime, the Specials, The Slackers)

Don't judge a band by it's name. I avoided listening to Two and a Half White Guys for a while because I was expecting some crappy 3rd wave ska band fronted by a pre-pubescent boy that whines over music that tries everything they it can to sound like Catch-22 while playing Reel Big Fish's cover of "Take On Me". Wow, I was wrong... way wrong.

Two and a Half White Guys aren't even a third wave ska band, and play with a more reggae feel in the veins of Sublime, but keeps true to their roots by pulling from influences such as The Specials. The vocals are clean and smooth, complimenting the chill ska/reggae/dub music.

A great album to welcome the warm weather that is right around the corner.

Dead Milkmen Plan New Material

Quirky punks unite! Legendary Philly punks The Dead Milkmen stated in a blog that they plan on releasing some new material:

"We had so much fun last November at the Fun Fun Fun Festival that we’ve decided to keep at it and play some shows to see what might develop as far as new material. We’re rehearsing and will see how it goes - stay tuned…"

I'm usually pretty wary of new material of reunited bands (*cough* Soul Brains *cough*), but it's the Dead Milkmen, so it's guaranteed to be fun.

Bars - Introducing... (For fans of F*cked Up, The Bronx, The Hope Conspiracy)

Sometimes hype can completely kill a band. Proclaimed to be the next messiahs of hardcore with their all-star lineup consisting of Dave Baker (vocals, Hope Conspiracy), Tim Cossar (guitar, Give Up The Ghost), and members from both Red Chord and Death by Stereo, Bars would never be able to live up to such expectations. Admittedly, I was one of those many people who dismissed Bars after a listen.

It's a shame, because Bars' debut "Introducing..." is a damn solid album that mixes blistering hardcore with some classic rock and roll hooks, making for some rather catchy, yet furious music. At times, the tempo could seem a little slow for a hardcore band, but the sluggish tempo often gives it a punk n roll feel to it. People who dig The Bronx, but wish they played a little heavier will eat "Introducing..." up.

If you're a fan of hardcore, definitely check Bars out... and if you dismissed these guys due to failed expectations, give them another chance with expecting Give Up The Ghost or Hope Conspiracy version 2.0.

A Tribute To All You Bored At Work Or School (A Mix!)

Hello fellow slackers and procrastinators! I know a lot of you check this website in the middle of the day when you're at work or at school, so even though I know it's not a popular time for web traffic, there's a reason why I post these at like 11:40 in the morning (because I love you all).

I was reading an article today stating how it is super important to stay on task on the job... so I'm going to call shenanigans on that article and say it was written by some rich CEO of some company who is probably playing golf all day and snorting coke with some hooker while the rest of us toil away in our little cubes or classrooms...

So all of you people completely bored at work or school, keep passive-aggressively fighting the man, and let the rest of us know in the comment section your favorite way to kill time at work!

NOFX - So Long and Thanks For All The Shoes (For fans of Screeching Weasel, Dillinger Four, The Queers)

NOFX is a band that really does not need any introduction, so I'll keep this post short.

In their 26 year existence, NOFX released more records than that Hilton girl has STDs (ok, that was too easy), and "So Long and Thanks For All The Shoes" is definitely one of their best. If you haven't listened to this one in a while... well, that's what we're here for, to bring back your past ghosts.

Also, I'm curious: what's your favorite NOFX album? Let me know in the comment section.

Icepick - Gold Rush (For fans of Municipal Waste, DRI, Cro Mags)

Finally, a thrash inspired band that gives me a reason to listen to something other than Municipal Waste!

Icepick hails from Holland, and are virtually unknown here in the United States. That's a shame, because they bring with them an onslaught of old school hardcore/thrash music in the veins of "Crossover" era DRI. While they don't play as fast as Municipal Waste (in all fairness... does anybody?), Gold Rush is definitely energetic enough, and teeters on the edge of both hardcore and thrash creating genre-confused kids coming out of the closet everywhere drawing X"s on their hand while flipping their baseball cap lid and writing "THRASH" across it with the same sharpie. Although, I have to admit: the dude's voice took a little for me to get used to, as the vocals are definitely more sluggish than I'm used to seeing in genre of music.

A solid quick album if you're looking to shred.

Mix For The Bros of The World (Who Will Probably Hate It)

Today's post comes from guest blogger Chicago hipster Bro-ntosaurus Hotpants Askance! So read up my bro-zillas.

So I went to this potluck dinner the other day (my roommate and I brought a wonderful oat-apple crisp that she made). And at this potluck, I was talking to this one guy at length about various common interests, most notably bicycles (and biking in the Chicago Winter, 'cause I'm hardcore like that). For a moment, I thought this kid could be my new friend, but there was something off about him—something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Maybe it had something to do with his hat…

Later on in the party, he was talking to someone on his cell phone, and I heard him call the caller "Broseph."

"Broseph?" I thought to myself, "I couldn't possibly be friends with someone who uses the word 'Broseph,' or 'Bro' or 'Brah' (especially 'Brah')." I mean, pardon me for being cruel, but that's just not acceptable. It's like the thousands of girls who were those ridiculous, ugly Ugg* boots—it just can't be tolerated.

So, like any good scowler, I went and wrote a blog about it. And here's a mix, dedicated to all you 'Brosephs' out there.

Osker - Idle Will Kill (For fans of Braid, Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms)

I'll be frank: I used to despise Osker's "Idle Will Kill". For nearly 8 years since it was released in 2001, I dismissed it as complete utter crap, showcasing yet another punk band that I loved who played face ripping snotty punk making way for acoustic guitars (it's really only one song) and slower melodies. It wasn't until a regular Housewives reader urged me to give it another chance. Thank you, because I was overlooking a really solid album.

For those who don't know, Osker was a punk band signed straight out of high school, and exploded in the punk world with their snotty-as-fuck album "Treatment 5". Their follow up "Idle Will Kill" tones down the So-Cal punk rock, and replaces it with a more developed sound.

Devon still gives us his brutally honest, albeit angsty lyrics ('Hey am I out of touch/the things I do to keep your mouth shut'). Osker's ability to construct a catchy melody didn't diminish either with their sophmore (and final release), as proved through songs such as "Patience".

While I don't think that "Idle Will Kill" comes anywhere even close to touching "Treatment 5", "Idle" is still a really solid album if you're looking for something completely angsty and honest, but in just a slightly more mature delivery.

Teenage Bottlerocket - Another Way (For fans of The Ramones, The Copyrights, The Groovie Ghoulies)

Nobody plays 3 chord punk rock like Teenage Bottlerocket... NOBODY! While these Wyoming punk rockers exploded in the punk community with their manna-esque "Total", they actually have a full length before "Total" that is damn solid.

"Another Way" features the pop-punk sound we've come to love from Teenage Bottlerocket, but is much more raw in it's delivery. Songs such as "Be Stag" and "Patrick" are top notch Teenage Bottlerocket, but I don't find most of the songs as memorable as anything on "Total" or even "Warning Device" (probably because their latter two were masterpieces, it's tough to compare with them). Nonetheless, "Another Way" is must-have Teenage Bottlerocket, and I recommend anyone who loves energetic punk rock to give this a listen.

Oh, in other news, anyone else hear about how Teenage Bottlerocket just signed to Fat Wreck? Didn't see that one coming (seriously).

Happy 200th Birthday Darwin! (A Mix!)

Today is Charles Darwin's 200th birthday, and I don't know about you, but I'm a huge nerd when it comes to evolutionary biology (seriously). It's amazing how one man completely changed the way the world thinks in terms of science and our origins, and how some people still refuse to believe evolution happened.

A few months ago, the Church of England apologize to Charles Darwin (126 years after the fact) for calling him a heretic and denying evolution. Hey it's a start, maybe in the year 2126, the church will apologize for hating on gay people too!

Either way, I came up with a list of books that I think are awesome in terms of evolutionary theory goes in case anyone is interested in reading them... oh, and of course, an mp3 mix (you'd be surprised how little punk songs are written about natural and sexual selection... I wonder why?)

Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge (For fans of Dragonforce, Flogging Molly, Horse the Band)

In a sea filled with half assed love songs and crappy indie remixes, what the hell is a pirate brotha supposed to do these days? Let Alestorm guide you and your crew through these treacherous musical waters...

Ok, all terrible metaphors aside, Alestorm is a self proclaimed pirate metal band hailing from Scotland. Mixing the synth breakdowns of power metal, the sing-alongs of folk, and the speed of thrash, these Scots sort of sounds like a mix between Dragon Force, Flogging Molly, and Horse the Band.

While the music is really solid, listeners need a sense of humor when it comes to the lyrics. They tackle pirate-y topics, and they often (ok, always) come off as really corny. The opening track for example: "We met an old man with a hook for a hand/He showed us a map that led to treasures untold/He said I'll give ye the map, if ye give me some gold". However, even with all the corniness, I have to admit that I felt the 5 year old in me get excited as they told their stories of epic adventures.

Definitely worth taking a listen if you're looking for something a bit different than usual, and in all honesty, if they came around Philly, I'd go see them. They seem like a band that would be awesome live.

Dumbass Yuppies Thinking I'm Trying To Break Into Their Car (A Mix!)

These are worth a dollar or two.

I swear, get a little alcohol in some clubbing "I seem to be experiencing a mid-life crisis" yuppie with some pre-mature male pattern baldness, and they think they run the whole god damn city.

The other night, I was out skating, when a car pulls up, and this drunk dude stumbles out towards me.

"YO!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?"

"Skating... You got a problem?"

"... never mind."

Ok, that should have been the end of it. Apparently however, our pre-mature male pattern baldness clubber friend also experiences Alzheimer".

"Yo! What are you doing?!"

"Didn't I already tell you?"

"Do you deal airbags?"

Now I've been asked if I deal drugs before by people looking to buy, which I find hilarious since personally I'm straight edge... but airbags? Must be code for some new drug... something so sinister, it cannot be called by it's real name otherwise the devil snatches your soul...

"I don't even know what the hell that is..."

"Because my car's been broken into so many times, and if it gets broken into again, I'm going to fucking flip."

Ahhh, he thinks I want to break into his car. For any drunk yuppies reading this: I'm no expert, but it's generally considered bad strategy to bring attention to your car if you don't want someone to break into it. Also, if you are talking to someone who you think is going to break into your car, its usally frowned upon to inform said suspect that there are valuables within.

"I understand people wanna do drugs and what not, but don't fund them with my fucking airbags!"

"I don't do drugs buddy."

"Well I do!"

Well no kidding! I would have never guessed by your seeminglessly flawless logic, and your random outbursts to threaten someone skating at 1 am!

"And I swear to god, if it gets broken into again... I'm going to flip!!!"

Well, quite honestly, I didn't even know that airbags were valuable, but now that he mentions it, I do have student loans to pay for... but I wouldn't know how to get an airbag out anyway. I hope someone came along and busted into his car on principle. The yuppies in my hood aren't too bright.

SNFU - In The Meantime and In Between Time (For fans of NOFX, Satanic Surfers, The Deviates)

SNFU has been around forever, and probably before a majority of the readers of this blog (including myself). When it came time to roll around their 10th full length "In The Meantime and In Between Time" back in '04, SNFU perfected that skate punk sound.

SNFU has made a name for themselves over the years, with Ken Chinn having an extremely distinct sing/talk vocal delivery, and complimenting guitar work that uses punk riffs, but often dips into metal and hard rock.

The album itself features some of SNFU's finest work (Cockatoo Quill, If I Die Will You Die, etc), but some of the songs in the middle don't really stand strong on their own, but work just fine when listening to the whole album.

A solid album that unfortunately, received very little fanfare and press when released, but should definitely be checked out if you're a fan of skate punk.

Municipal Waste - Tango and Thrash EP (A Tribute To Kurt Russell)

Lately, Municipal Waste has become one of my favorite bands. I simply cannot get enough of their high energy crossover-thrash-face-explosion-party-on-your-face music. I thought I had all of their material, but then I heard of the Tango and Thrash EP... which is a tribute to Kurt Russell.

....Hell Yes! Admittedly, I used to often get Russell Crowe and Kurt Russell mixed up, but this was before I saw "Escape From L.A" 2 weekends ago. ("Duuuude. You've seen Escape From L.A and never saw Escape From N.Y? Wow. Kill yourself"). I know, I just lost so many scene points.

Have Nots - Serf City USA (for fans of Operation Ivy, Rancid, Suicide Machines)

The Have Nots are one of the best bands that you may have never heard of if you don't live on the east coast... hopefully their newest independently released "Serf City USA" will change that.

Sounding something like the illegitimate bastard child of Operation Ivy and The God Awfuls, Boston's Have Nots found the perfect blend of punk and ska riffs. Don't let the ska influences fool you however... I highly doubt you'll find a bunch of 12 year olds in pork pie hats and suspenders running in place at one of their shows. The Have Nots are no frills pure as fuck punk rock.

While it's a bit early to be calling it, I get the feeling this will be on my top 10 of 2009, and if it somehow isn't, then this will be one hell of a year for music.

As most of you know, Propagandhi is coming out with a new album "Supporting Caste" in March, and finally, someone posted the first track to a homemade video on youtube.

All I have to say about the song is: holy shit.

(Oh and for those who are curious, the main picture is from a book called "Codex Seraphinianus", which is pretty much an encyclopedia about an imaginary world.

This dude is a fucking bastard.

Ahh yes, wintertime. Where it's too damn cold to go outside, so we all stay in and get the flu. I haven't posted here in a few days because for the most part, I've been in bed, completely passed out.
