SNFU - The One Voted Most Likely To Succeed (For fans of Propagandhi, Good Riddance, Face To Face)

Canadian skate thrash gods (eh?) Forming back in 1981, SNFU (which stands for Society's No Fucking Use) has quite the catalog of albums under their belt (9 full studio albums to be exact). The One Voted Most Likely To Succeed was their 6th release, and it is more solid than your stool after eating green bananas.

TOVMLTS features SNFU's perfect blend of straight up thrash and skate punk. The mix isn't as hard hitting as "In The Meantime and Between Time", but the songs are overall definitely heavier.

A classic SNFU album that needs to be checked out by any fan of skate punk.

Annabel - Each and Everyone (For fans of Built to Spill, Look Mexico, Modest Mouse)

If it's not fast and heavy, reggae, or Johann Sebastian Bach, I usually hate it. If the music sounds hipster-y (you know, that indie shuffle drum beat, vocals try to sound like Modest Mouse or Pavement), you can count on me double hating it.

So the fact that I'm liking Annabel's "Each and Everyone" is a bit of a logical fallacy. The songs are slow, long, and uhhh.... really good actually. There's a lot going on in these songs. Bells, keys, cymbal heavy, and intricate guitar work make these songs incredibly melodic and ambient. I'll admit, the songs do have a tendency to run together, and I can't listen to more than 4-5 in a row before I need to take a break and come back, but that probably has more to do with my A.D.D than anything else.

I'd swear that these dudes were from Brooklyn if I didn't know that they were from Kent, Ohio. Oh, and I can't be the only punk rock fan who is digging these guys, as they played last year's Fest 7.

Hello trusty housewivers... I'm going to be gone up until Tuesday or so hanging out in Boston with some friends, so I probably won't have a chance to update until then.

Ensign - Direction of Things To Come (For fans of Paint It Black, Gorilla Biscuits, Ten Yard Fight)

I don't know how it happened. Being a Jersey kid, there are two bands that I'm completely embarrassed that I've never seen live: Bigwig and Ensign. Hell, even my girlfriend who completely hates hardcore and shows has seen both of these bands live.

For those who don't know, Ensign is an old school hardcore band that is pretty big in NJ's hardcore scene. Playing good ole' fashioned hardcore in the veins of Youth of Today, Ensign actually has a bit more punk elements than most old school hardcore bands.

Direction of Things to Come were their first full length album, released back in 1997. If you dig gang vocals, mic grabs, and stage dives... this is a pretty essential album.

mc chris / Whole Wheat Bread (live in Philly 5/19/09)

Last night, I headed down to Philly's beloved First Unitarian to catch my favorite nerd rapper mc chris. Last time I saw the master chief, I was pretty sure that the predator baby was going to come out of my stomach, thus due to extreme pains, it made the show a bit less than enjoyable (yay for being a vegatarian allergic to soy).

This time around I went soy free, and pain free... and ready to dance stand and listen to one nerdy rapper. Last time I was a bit shocked by the crowd, so this time I was prepared for the Chewbaca costumes, darth vadar face masks, and the all around lack of energy from the crowd.

Whole Wheat Bread:

I've seen Whole Wheat Bread more times than I can remember, and their shows are always hit or miss. They either completely kill it live, or completely suck. Unfortunately, last night these Jacksonville (wannabe) thug punk rockers turned up the suckage. Playing waaaay too many "dirty south ya'll" raps, the few pop-punk songs they played completely seemed to lack any energy whatsoever.

The lack of energy didn't stop a group of about 10 dedicated fans who started to pit (although I don't even know if it could technically be considered a mosh pit...) in the middle of the nerd crowd, who were obviously EXTREMELY pissed off anybody was dancing. Regardless, I definitely wasn't feeling the band last night.

mc chris:

mc chris surprised me with his setlist. Concentrating on mostly older songs (only a few newer ones were played at all), mc chris tore up the microphone with the opening of "Geek". Busting straight into The Tussin afterwords, the only movement in the crowd came from 2 dudes who were dancing and bumping into people (and mc chris kicked them out for being "dicks"... sigh.)

He seemed in much better spirits than he did last time I saw him, and seemed to be enjoying himself on stage with his constant crowd control (whatever he said, people did).

The stage banter was hilarious ("that's when I realized that twilight was racist: all american-indians are werewolves"), and he even stopped the show for a little bit for a quick Q & A session (which he said he wouldn't take requests... so I guess no "Check The Ring, Yo" for silverunity). For the last song, mc chris came back on stage with Whole Wheat Bread to play "Fett's Vette", which made me firmly believe that mc chris should do a tour with a backing band, much more energy.

I'd definitely recommend going to see mc chris, but expect a crowd that makes indie shows seem lively.

Higher Giant and Off With Their Heads (Live In Philly 5/18/09)

Last night, although beyond exhaustion, I headed out to the tiny dive up in North Philly known as the Barbary in order to catch Higher Giant. I was running really late, but the show was running even later, so I made it in time for the openers.

Detournement:

Detournement is compromised of a pretty respectable lineup: members from Bigwig, Worthless United, Ensign, and a slew of other cream of the crop Jersey bands. Theoretically, they should completely rip it live with their experience. Their performance last night seemed slightly lackluster.

Granted the band completely skipped a sound check, and thus there were no vocals in the mix at all, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and blame it on the shitty sound mix.

Higher Giant:

The reason I came to the show! I've seen Higher Giant twice before, and also consisting of a solid lineup (members from Grey Area, Kid Dynamite, The Arsons, etc), Higher Giant always kills it live. Although it seemed like no one except me knew who they were or any of the songs, last night wasn't any exception.

Going through their entire catalog, they played everything off of "The First 5", and introduced about 5 new songs that haven't been released yet. The songs definitely were solid, and I'm definitely stoked to check out the new ones once they're released.

If they come around your area, definitely hit them up, one of the most underrated punk bands around today.

Off With Their Heads

These were the dudes that everyone (except myself) was there to see, and the crowd finally livened up once they took the stage. I've never actually heard them before, but they definitely reminded me of Dillinger Four/Screeching Weasel (which is always a good thing).

Stage banter was non-existent, and it was a non-stop onslaught of cheery, drinky punk songs. The show definitely made me want to pick up some stuff by these guys to check out, and it was a fun show, even though I didn't know any of their songs.

I Went To A Graduation And All I Got Was My Camera Stolen (A Mix!)

So, this past weekend I headed out to bumble-fuck Pennsylvania to go to my brother's college graduation. On the morning of said graduation, my camera either:

1. Fell out of my pocket
2. Was stolen by some sketchy, "I actually have a gold tooth and look like I'm a 40 year old greaser" dude who came up to me.

Since I pretty much searched that entire place multiple times looking for my camera, I'm gonna guess it was jacked... at a graduation. I hope I'm wrong, but either way, it's a good excuse for a Monday Mix.

Rise Against's Brand Spankin' New 7"

Wow, Rise Against still does have the ability to make blistering punk rock songs, as proven on their latest Self Titled 7 inch released on May 12th, 2009 on their old label Fat Wreck.

They don't mention the new 7" anywhere on their website, and I was reluctant to check it out after hearing that Nickelback wanna-be album known as "Appeal To Reason". The 2 songs were actually recorded during the Appeal To Reason sessions, but since they're heavier, they probably didn't make the major label cut.

The songs themselves have a very "The Unraveling/RPM" feel to them (which is rather nostalgic, that's when I started listening to the band), and definitely are the best songs they released in the past 5 years.

Protest The Hero (Live In Philly 5/11/09)

Yes... I know, it's been a show blitz here at the housewives, but that's how we role! Despite feeling like utter shit on Monday, I headed out to see my favorite Canadian prog-metal/thrashers Protest The Hero. When I got in, Protest The Hero's merch guy started to talk to me about Propagandhi (I was wearing a Propagandhi shirt), and said although it doesn't happen every show, they might play a cover. Awesome.

When I got in... Misery Signals was setting up. They were your standard metalcore/screamo band so I couldn't really get into them, but they seemed cool ("if you like us tonight... go online, and download our album. We don't care, pirate that shit!")

Protest The Hero

First off, let me say that I was shocked by the lack of a solid pit for the band. Seriously, the pit often consisted of just me, and I was running a 101 fever that night, so I can only dance for so long. With that being said, Protest The Hero was tight as usual, although they only played two songs off of "Kezia", with the rest coming off of "Fortress" (I love both albums, so it doesn't matter to me).

They gave multiple shout outs to "the dude in the Propagandhi shirt", and ripped into "Fuck The Border", which sadly, 99% of the crowd didn't know what it was. Needless to say, I was the only one in the pit, and once they finished, "That goes out to the only person in the crowd who knows it." Dang-fangled kids these days and their lack of knowledge about the great Propagandhi...

FEAR Live In Philly (5/9/09)

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday, I've been mad sick. Although I do have a funny story involving playing kickball and trash talking this big dude... who I later learned plays for the Philadelphia Eagles.... anyways...

So on Saturday, after the Bomb The Music Industry show, I knew FEAR was playing at the Trocadero, but when I tried to buy tickets it was sold out. It was a 21+ show, and they were having it on the Balcony (which holds 250 as opposed to the 1000 in front of the normal stage). I was heading home, and realized I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't try to get in (I mean, it's fucking FEAR), so I headed straight to the venue.

I waited outside for a good hour with some other kids trying to see if anyone had any extra tickets. Finally, I bought a ticket from someone and after trying to help some other kids find tickets, I headed inside just in time to see Mongrel.

Mongrel
While the crowd seemed to just shout "FEAR!!!" during their entire set, I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by Mongrel. The music was heavy and fast, mixing straight up punk rock with good ole' fashioned rock and roll. They had an amazing stage presence, and the vocalist delivered his lyrics with machine gun speed I'm sure he can probably battle some rappers. If they come around your area, definitely check them out.

FEAR
I wasn't sure how the crowd was going to react since it was a 21+ show, and I wasn't really expecting anyone to pit, even though it was FEAR. Oh my god... am I glad I was wrong. The second Lee Ving headed up to the stage (there was no back entry, you had to go through the crowd), people started pushing to touch him (which I found hilarious... I mean, I like the band, but I'm not about to idolize the dude).

Once they were finally set up, they broke straight into "I Love Livin' In The City", and the crowd broke into the craziest pit I've been in a loooong time, and didn't let up the rest of the night. There was none of that circle bullshit, it was a full blown frenzy with 15 people falling at once, people completely knocking down the bouncers (who just laughed, as they realized there was nothing they could do to control the crowd).

Now Lee Ving is an old dude, and I was worried the music would be toned down a bit... while his stage banter wasn't as offensive as anything I've seen them do from the 80s, he definitely still has it. Although I must admit, the patriotic bullshit during the show was a bit grating...but I've learned to take everything Lee says with a grain of salt.

If they come around your area (except on Warped Tour), seriously, do yourself a favor and go see these legends. One of the greatest punk bands of the 80s, and even in his old age, Lee Ving is still more punk rock than 99% of the bands today.

Bomb The Music Industry (Live In Philly 5/9/09)

Jesus... this saturday was insane (let's say it involved a FEAR show, more on that tomorrow). I headed out to the Fire (a small dive bar that holds about 10 people at it's widest point) to catch Long Island punk rockers Bomb The Music Industry. When I walked in (after having some crackhead in North Philly scared shitless that my hands were in my pocket because he thought I was carrying a gun...), Whiskey Glass Revenge was up and playing. I don't think I caught enough of them to comment on them, soooo....

Barnaby Jones

Hooooly crap. I never heard of these guys before, but they melted faces. While the crowd wasn't into them at all (besides me and about 5 people), that didn't stop them from rocking out and having the time of their lives on stage. Blazing hardcore in the veins of The Steal... I can guarentee you'll be hearing more about them on this site.

Bomb The Music Industry

The dead crowd finally broke out into a frenzy once BTMI took the stage. Of course, taking a page from contemporaries NOFX, they didn't actually start playing for real for a good 7 minutes as they talked to the crowd about how much the new Green Day sucked... and broke straight into a joke cover (which was happening all night).

The band was hilarious as usual ("We only bring Barnaby Jones around so people don't fuck with us... Hey don't mess with BTMI, they're friends with the tough band!"), and played an energetic (albeit sloppy) set. I would have loved to hear more off Scrambles, but it was still tight. They played with only 4 people ("It was cheaper to bring the iPod than the other two members of the band... which doesn't make sense since they don't get paid anyway").

Transit - Stay Home (For fans of Lifetime, Smoke or Fire, Static Radio NJ)

It's really rare for me to like a more melodic punk/hardcore album after the first listen (hell, I even thought one of my favorites Smoke or Fire was too whiny first time I heard them...), but after one spin of Transit's "Stay Home" EP, I instantly fell in love with their sound.

Transit plays Lifetime-esque punk rock, with a sound not too unlike contemporaries Static Radio NJ. There's a lot going on here: the intricate yet adrenaline laced melodies unfold the more you listen to the album, and the vocals manage to be snotty, gruff, and emotional without sounding like some dude crying on the microphone.

Definitely a solid release for 2009, any fan of Lifetime, A Wilhelm Scream, or melodic punk rock in general should check this one out.

Hub City Stompers - Ska Ska Black Sheep (For fans of The Toasters, The Piestasters, Westbound Train)

I've been waiting for Hub City Stompers' "Ska Ska Black Sheep" ever since I heard them play "Ska Train To Dork-Ville" back in 2007. For those of you who don't know, Hub City Stompers are New Jersey's self proclaimed "ska for people who hate ska". They mix traditional skinhead 2-tone with touches of old school punk rock, and are one of the most energetic live ska bands around.

I was a little surprised by "Ska Ska Black Sheep", as I was expecting a full-length of all original material, but the album is actually split in two: the first half are new songs, and the second half are dub remakes of older songs.

The original songs themselves on the album are really solid. "Clutch Tango" and "Ska Train To Dork-Ville" are prime examples of HCS songs. The songs don't translate as well recorded as the do live (especially "Where's My Hooligans"), but this could be to all the years I've seen them play the songs live without ever hearing a recorded version. Unfortunately, the mixing seems to make the songs less energetic than anything on "Dirty Jersey", and I this is largely due to the fact the guitar is barely audiable in a decent amount of the songs.

I'm not a big fan of dub music, so I didn't really like the second half of the album, but the first half is a must for any Hub City Stompers fan. While I don't think they topped "Dirty Jersey" (or even "Blood, Sweat, And Beers"), "Ska Ska Black Sheep" definitely has handful of solid songs.

The Top 5 Punk Band Names

Let's be honest with ourselves... punk band names are usually very formulaic. If you want to start a Ramones style/surf punk band, throw the word "teenage" in the beginning (Teenage Bottlerocket, Teenage Harlots, Teenage Whore Moans, etc.)

Going for a more traditional punk band? No problem, just put the word "against" in there (Against All Authority, Against Me!, Rise Against...) So let's give credit where credit is due, and recognize those bands that put a little more "oompha" in the thought of their name!

5. Reagan Youth
Simple, elegant, and to the point. Comparing someone to Hitler without ever actually coming out and saying it.
4. Dead Kennedys
Ok, so apparently if you want to start an 80s punk band... throw a president's last name in there (Obama's Pajamas for anyone who wants to start a revivalist band). Seriously though, think about the name "Dead Kennedys"... genius.

3. Bomb The Music Industry!
Holy shit, you know it's serious with the presence of the exclamation mark. Besides everyone who owns a BTMI shirt being on 10 federal watch lists for the name.

2. The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza
Seriously, does this one need an explanation? Ok, so technically, they are more of a metal-core band, but whatever. Tony Danza actually found out about the band on his talk show, and hilarity ensued. Unfortunately, the video that I knew of isn't working right, so if you find this video, definitely post the link in the comment section. Let's just say it involves a lot of old ladies clapping to grindcore.

1. This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb
No band name has ever started so many terrorist scares. An airport was evacuated, a dude in Ohio was arrested for inducing panic and they closed down a college while calling in the bomb squad, and numerous similar stories happened across the country. Props to you, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb.

What's your top 5 punk band names? Let me hear dem' lists people!

NOFX - Coaster

Take a look at your vinyl (hipster...)/digital (pirate...) /cd (obsolete-ist) collection, and see if you own Pump Up The Valuum and American Errorist... if you do, then you pretty much own NOFX's latest album "Coaster". This could be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from NOFX on Coaster, but I was pleasantly surprised. The songs aren't groundbreaking musically, but they do contain 12 solid, melodic skate punk songs from these Cali oldsters that I actually haven't been able to stop listening to.

Fat Mike does tread new ground lyrically with the song "My Orphan Year", the most heartfelt and serious song I've ever heard by NOFX. The rest of the songs are your typical NOFX subject matter: religious people are idiots, awkward conversations with the band Sara & Tegan, and being an alcoholic.

If you like NOFX, then you'll obviously like "Coaster", but don't expect anything groundbreaking. As for me, I've been digging it, and think it's the best NOFX album in a few years.
